The Irish Roundtable
The purpose of The Irish Roundtable is to stimulate dialogue between individuals and groups across campus. All persons in the Notre Dame community interested in discussing and exploring with colleagues the pressing issues of collegiate athletics and the impact of such issues on ND faculty/staff, administrators, coaches and athletes are invited to join.
Past Irish Roundtable discussions have included:
- Cultural Impacts on Students
Are college students different today, compared to 10 years ago? Are collegiate athletes different? How and why? This discussion centered around perceived and experienced trends and the professional and practical implications of those trends across constituents on campus. - Coaching Strategies for Creating an Optimal Achievement Climate
A special Irish Roundtable discussion was facilitated by Dr. Blake Miller of The Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education. Dr. Miller specializes in research and application of the coach-created motivational climate on sport morality. - The NCAA “Five & Five” Proposal
Currently athletes have 4 years of athletic eligibility to complete in 5 academic years/10 semester. The NCAA is considering allowing 5 years of athletic eligibility in 5 years. Tex Dutile, Professor of Law and Head of the Faculty Board on Athletics facilitated a discussion around how this proposal, if passed, will impact student-athletes and create implications for institutions of higher education. - Eating Disorders and the Notre Dame Student
Mandy Clark, R.D., Sports Nutritionist, and Valerie Staples, University Counseling Center, Staff Counselor for Eating Disorders, staff members of ND, facilitated a discussion on the pressing issues of eating disorders that is prevalent across the Notre Dame campus. Both faculty and coaches will benefit from discussing this relevant topic with experts who are closest to the issue.
